"How much does sod cost?" is one of the first things people ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on your yard. Two lawns with the same square footage can price very differently. Here is what actually changes the number.
1. Square footage
Sod is sold and installed by the square foot, so size is the starting point. We measure your yard from satellite before we quote, so you are not paying for a guess.
2. What has to come out
Removing an old lawn, weeds, roots or old landscaping takes labor and disposal. A bare dirt yard costs less to prep than a yard with an old lawn that has to be cut out.
3. Soil and grading
This is the part cheap quotes skip. Low spots, poor drainage and hard clay all need work before sod goes down. Clemson Extension recommends working amendments into the upper 4 to 6 inches of soil and keeping the finished grade about an inch below sidewalks and driveways (Clemson HGIC, Lawn Establishment). Fixing the grade costs more now and saves the lawn later.
4. The grass you pick
Tall fescue, bermuda, zoysia and centipede sod are not priced the same. Zoysia in particular tends to cost more.
5. Access
Can a pallet of sod get close to the yard, or does everything have to be carried around the house? Tight access adds time.
6. Sprinklers
If you are adding a sprinkler system with the new lawn, doing both at once is easier than coming back later.
How to compare quotes
Ask every company the same questions: Does the price include removing the old lawn? How much soil prep is included? Is grading included? What grass is it? What happens if part of the lawn does not take? A low number that skips the soil work usually is not the better deal.
