Zoysia vs Bermuda: Which Warm Season Grass Should You Pick?

Thick green lawn after sod installation

Zoysia and bermuda are the two warm season grasses people ask about most. Both thrive in full sun, both turn tan in winter, and both are common around Rock Hill. They are not the same lawn, though.

Look and feel

Zoysia forms a very thick, dense, carpet like lawn. Bermuda is finer and spreads fast, which is why it fills in damaged spots quickly.

Wear

Bermuda handles heavy traffic and bounces back fast, which is why it is used on many sports fields. Zoysia is tough too, but recovers more slowly because it grows more slowly.

Shade

Neither likes heavy shade. Bermuda needs full sun. Zoysia handles a little more shade than bermuda, but still wants most of the day in the sun. Clemson Extension has a good fact sheet on zoysia care (Clemson HGIC, Zoysiagrass).

Upkeep

Bermuda grows fast, so it needs frequent mowing and will creep into beds if the edges are not kept up. Zoysia grows slower, so it needs less mowing.

Seed or sod

Bermuda can be grown from seed or sod. Many zoysia lawns are only practical as sod, plugs or sprigs, since the low, slow types are not grown from seed (NC State Extension Gardener Handbook).

Quick pick

  • Kids, dogs and full sun: bermuda.
  • A dense, manicured look and a bit less mowing: zoysia.
  • Mostly shade: neither. Look at tall fescue instead.
